Why Water Treatment is Important Water treatment is the removal of impurities such as suspended matter, bad colours, tastes and minerals such as iron and manganese from water in order to make it safe to humans, living organisms in the farm and also to help in various uses like industrial water supply and water recreation. Treatment of drinking water involves a series processes that are aimed at the removal of particles that may lead to contamination and cause short and long term risks. If raw water contains materials and suspended particles which are greater than 1mm then preliminary screening is necessary by use of screens of different apertures. Course screens are often fixed bar screens that have a screen surface which consists of various vertical metal bars of a given thickness that are spaced at specific intervals depending on how it is supposed to be applied. Intermediate screens are fitted with water cleaning jets which wash away any debris remaining after getting out of the course screens. Settling or sedimentation is the next process where finer particles are removed because they may eventually block the filters. Water then undergoes coagulation and flocculation process that will help in agglomeration of smaller particles that permit settling in a reasonable time. Filtration is the next process that helps removing some particles by passing through a series of sand filters, the high rate sand filter is usually easy to clean and reduces the load of particulate materials on the slow sand filter. Because of all this processes, water treatment therefore has many advantages that make it useful to people and every organism in a farm. It helps in prevention of any occurrence of diseases because many disease outbreaks are associated with contaminated water. Some equipment requires treated water in order to work effectively for example softened water can be used in heat exchange equipment to prevent scale formation ,it also helps in removal of soluble salts which can influence texture of some vegetables. There are some microorganisms that are very dangerous to someone’s health and may cause intoxications, therefore treating water will prevent any of the organisms from surviving in water. Also, treated water facilitates the removal of some metals that are present In water because they may react with other metals causing deposits which may make the water unsuitable for drinking. Water treatment helps in the removal of unpleasant tastes and odors that are present, this makes water good compared to when it was still raw. Water treatment leads to a cleaner and brighter laundry because due to softening of water during the process, hardness which may make laundry look dirty is removed.
