What is Covered Under Employment Laws? Employment laws are important and businesses should pay attention to it. Moreover, every organization must make all their employees aware of their rights as mandated by this law. Thus, the responsible department displays reading materials pertaining to these rights in conspicuous places in the building for everyone to see. On this note, there are eight primary Federal employment laws that everyone should memorize by heart. The first one is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law prohibits employers from discriminating employees or applicants basing on his or her religion, color, race, gender and national origin. Also, sexual harassment and sex discrimination due to pregnancy is also covered by this law. The Civil Rights Act of 1966 follows the list. This law more specifically bans discrimination on the basis of race or ethnicity. Meanwhile, the third one is the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Under such law, both men and women in the same working position and condition must receive equal compensation.

The fourth law is the one many have heard about but do not completely understand. This one is the Disabilities Act. Under this law, a person with disability is protected against discrimination.

The fifth is Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 which protects people of different national origin or citizenship but are authorized to find employment in the United States against discrimination. Number six on the line is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. This one is more commonly called ADEA for short. This law protects anybody age 40 and above against discrimination. The seventh pertains to the Equal Employment Opportunity Act. This law bans discrimination on people from the minority group who have poor credit rating. Lastly, there is a law that protects a person who has declared bankruptcy against discrimination. This paragraph refers to the Bankruptcy Act. Those are the eight basic employment laws of authorized by the Federal government. Other than these laws, a state may observe its own employments laws. Besides those laws, there are several more that must be observed by employees and employers in the United States. An example is the Occupational Safety and Health Act. This act mandates people in all 50 states, including DC and all US territories to pay attention to specific health and safety regulations. Another law pertains to FMLA or known as Family Medical Leave Act. This law lets an employee take unpaid time off from work under specific circumstances. Another one is Employee Polygraph Protection Act Labor Law. The Fair Labor Standards Act or FLSA is another example.
